How to prevent ingrown hairs

How to prevent ingrown hairs (and what to do if it's already too late)

Ingrown hairs are perhaps the biggest downside of hair removal. Your skin feels smooth, but suddenly red bumps or painful spots appear. Sometimes it seems as if your skin actually gets worse from hair removal, when you want to achieve the opposite. Luckily, there's a lot you can do to prevent ingrown hairs, and to treat them if they do appear.

What exactly are ingrown hairs?

Normally a hair grows straight up through the skin's surface. With ingrown hairs, it curls back or grows under the skin. This causes a bump, redness, and sometimes even a small inflammation. They often appear in places with a lot of friction, such as the underarms, legs, and bikini line.

Exfoliating is your best friend

The most important way to prevent ingrown hairs is exfoliating. This removes dead skin cells that can clog pores and hair follicles. That way the hair gets the space to grow out normally.

Tip: Use a mild scrub or a chemical exfoliant with AHA or BHA twice a week. Don't overdo it, because exfoliating too much can actually make your skin more vulnerable.

Shave smart

The shaving technique makes a big difference. Always shave in the direction of hair growth, not against it. Use short strokes, a clean blade, and replace your razor regularly. Dry shaving is an absolute no-go, because it increases the chance of cuts and ingrowth.

Extra tip: Take a warm shower before shaving. The heat opens the pores and softens the hairs.

Tools that help

Sometimes shaving simply isn't the best option, especially for sensitive zones. A trimmer can then be a solution. The Parvale® 4-in-1 Multi Trimmer works close to the skin, but not so close that hairs stay stuck under the skin. That way you significantly reduce the chance of ingrowth.

What to do if it's already too late?

- Don't scratch or pick. This can cause scars or worsen an inflammation.

- Warm compress. Hold a warm, damp cloth on the spot for a few minutes. This softens the skin and can help the hair come to the surface.

- Sterile tweezers. Can you clearly see the hair? Then you can carefully remove it, but only if it's really visible.

- Soothing cream. Use a product with soothing ingredients like aloe vera or niacinamide to reduce redness and irritation.

Lifestyle factors

Tight clothing, sweating a lot, or exercising without proper cleansing can increase the chance of ingrown hairs. Make sure your skin stays clean and dry, and wear looser-fitting clothing right after hair removal.

Finally

Ingrown hairs are annoying, but not an unavoidable problem. With a smart routine of exfoliating, careful shaving, and using the right tools, you can largely prevent them. And if one does appear, a gentle approach works better than rough picking.
